Our son Joshua entered the world in March 2012, and I can’t put into words the joy he has brought to our lives. I believe he has taught us more than we have taught him.
So many thoughts go through my mind as a father. What will Joshua want to do when he is older? Will he be an athlete? A musician? An engineer? What kind of world will he live in?
From what we’ve seen so far, we believe Joshua will be a fighter. His entrance into the world is a testament to his persevering spirit. What seemed like a normal birth turned into a nightmare when my wife's placenta suddenly separated from her uterus in the birthing room. During birth, Joshua lost a dangerous amount of blood and he was without oxygen for some time. He was rushed to Children’s Hospital in Columbus, OH, where he spent eight days. For the first seventy-two hours, he was placed on a cooling blanket that lowered the metabolism of his body for the purpose of hindering additional damage to his brain and other vitals.
This was definitely a frightening period, but God brought us through it and graciously spared our little guy’s life. Today, Joshua has more energy and personality than we could imagine. As far as we know, he is normal and healthy. His big eyes, his spunky personality, his little smile and contagious laugh are all blessings that warm our hearts as parents.
We held your image/A little bean of black and white/A miracle growing inside/We felt you kicking/So strong, we lay awake at night/Wondering what you’d be like/Wondering what you’d be like/So long waiting, soon the day came/It all looked ok/But in an instant, nurses panicked/They took you away/Joshua, Joshua/Follow the light, you’ve gotta fight,/We’re praying somehow/Joshua, Joshua/Breath in His hope, He’s holding you close/Don’t give up now/The bills keep coming/The nights awake with hungry cries/Wondering how we’ll get by/We’re always running/Two ships so far away from shore/Longing for chapters before/Longing for chapters before/How quick we lose sight of the sunlight/And thankfulness fades/With every testing comes a blessing/He’s smiling today/Joshua, Joshua/We’ll follow the Light, We’ve gotta fight/We’re praying somehow/Joshua, Joshua/We’ll breath in His hope, He’s holding us close/We won’t give up now/And the same God who formed you and saved you/Is the same God who’s watching us now/And we know that He loves us, He loves us so much, so much/Joshua, Joshua/We’ll follow the Light, We’ve gotta fight/We’re praying somehow/Joshua, Joshua/We’ll breath in His hope, He’s holding us close/We won’t give up now (x3)
